A New Job, A New Post

Recently I acquired a new position teaching math at Oak Harbor High School in Oak Harbor, WA. This opening came into existence largely because OHHS was awarded a grant from the Department of Defense. The full details of this grant are beyond the scope of my knowledge at this time, and unnecessary for this blog post.

As a result of earning this grant, some teachers at our high school are receiving additional training, and I had my first training session today. The content taught was enriching, and aligned strongly with information I was taught in my MAT program at Concordia University in Portland, OR. The parallels gave me insight into the quality of instruction (or at least the adherence to "current best practices") offered through my Master's program.

As I have only attended half of the workshop thus far, I will reserve comments for completion of the training. However, I will say that I am impressed already, and I am walking away with tangible ideas for my classroom.

This post primarily serves as a holding house for tonight;s "Homework Assignment."

1. Read the article:  Five “Key Strategies” for Effective Formative Assessment

2. Take Teaching Perspective Inventory, a 10 minute survey which profiles you on five perspectives on good teaching.

Regarding number 2, I took the survey, and will post the graphical results here. Since I have not taught professionally yet, I am curious how the survey will change after one year in the classroom. I hope to return to the survey in one year and re-profile myself for comparison. For now, consider this my First Blog Post as a Teacher.
